The Main Motto of Wisdom Teeth Removal

Apr 01, 2020

A surgical procedure will be needed to remove one or more wisdom teeth which are the four permanent teeth of adults located in the posterior corners of the mouth on the top and bottom. We are providing clarification about it to make you understand why a wisdom tooth should be extracted.

If a wisdom tooth does not have the space to erupt it can result in an impacted tooth causing pain, infections, or other dental problems and in such cases, it needs to be removed. Wisdom tooth extraction can be performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon.

For preventing potential future problems some dentists or oral surgeons may recommend wisdom tooth extraction even when the impacted teeth are not causing any problems.

Why Is Wisdom Teeth Extraction Recommended?

The last permanent teeth to erupt in the mouth are the wisdom teeth or third molars. These teeth erupt between the ages of 17 and 25 and some people may never develop them. The lucky few experience normal wisdom teeth eruption was similar to their other molars that do not cause any problems.

It is common for many people to develop impacted wisdom teeth that just do not have sufficient space to erupt in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth may only erupt partially or not at all. The impacted tooth may cause problems such as:

  • Erupt at an angle towards the next tooth.
  • It may grow at an angle towards the back of the mouth.
  • The teeth may grow at a right angle as though it is lying down within the jawbone.
  • It may grow up or down like the other teeth but stay trapped within the jawbone.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth and the Problems Associated

You will be recommended to have your impacted wisdom tooth extracted if it is causing problems such as:

  • Trapping food and debris behind it.
  • Causing infections or gum disease.
  • Tooth decay is affecting a partially erupted wisdom tooth.
  • Causing damage to a tooth close by or the surrounding bone.
  • A fluid-filled cyst develops around the wisdom tooth.
  • Causing complications with orthodontic treatments to straighten the teeth.

Preventing Dental Problems in the Future

Dental professionals disagree about the need to extract wisdom teeth that are not causing any problems. Predicting future problems with impacted wisdom teeth can be difficult but a rationale exists for preventive action because:

  • Wisdom teeth without any symptoms can still harbor disease.
  • If sufficient space is not available for the tooth to erupt it can become difficult to reach it for cleaning properly.
  • Concerning complications with wisdom teeth are not common in younger adults.
  • Older adults, however, may experience difficulty with surgery along with complications after.

What Are the Risks of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Long-term complications may not be experienced in most wisdom tooth extractions. However, removing an impacted wisdom tooth may require a surgical approach that involves cutting the gum tissue and removing the bone. Some complications may occur rarely causing people to suffer from:

  • An infection in the socket from trapped food particles and bacteria.
  • A dry socket that is painful or the exposure of bone due to the postsurgical blood clot being lost from the site of the surgical incision.
  • Damages to the teeth close by, nerves, sinuses, or jawbone.

How to Prepare for the Extraction?

Your dentist may decide to perform the extraction in the office. However, if you have a deeply impacted tooth or if the extraction needs an in-depth surgical approach you may be referred to an oral surgeon. The procedure by itself will be comfortable because besides making the area numb with local anesthetic the oral surgeon may even recommend sedation.

The Surgical Procedure

Wisdom tooth extractions are generally performed as an outpatient procedure meaning you will be able to go home the same day. You will be provided with instructions about what you can and cannot do before the surgery on the day of your scheduled extraction. However, to prepare yourself you can ask the oral surgeon some questions about whether:

  • Will you need someone to drive you home after the extraction?
  • When do you need to arrive at the dental clinic or hospital?
  • Do you need to fast for the procedure and if so for how many hours?
  • Can you have your prescription medications and how soon before the surgery can you do so?
  • Should you avoid any non-prescription medications before the procedure?

Results from the Procedure

You will not be required to visit your dentist again if your wisdom tooth extraction did not require any stitches, don’t have any complications, or are not experiencing any persistent problems as it will be the case if you have the wisdom tooth extracted by Dr. Mark Summerford at Central Park Dental Care. Visiting this clinic will ensure you can get rid of the wisdom tooth and continue enjoying good oral health because they will never again bother you in your life.
